Aug. 2016 Wildlife At Risk incorporated with  Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography published a small book of Sea Snake in Vietnam.

The English Vietnamese bilingual story entiteld “Gab’s Story” was developed based on facts about illegal wildlife poaching, trading and consumption in Vietnam. This story is about a painful but lucky journey of Gab – a Yellow cheeked Crested Gibbon. The journey starts from a beautiful jungle to a painful time when Gab’s family is destroyed by poachers, through a miserable chapter when Gab experiences so many endangered widlife being traded and killed and ends with a happy ending when Gab is luckily rescued and released back to the wild. Over 100,000 students and teachers from Ho Chi Minh City heard this story when visiting the SOS Exhibition – Educating on Wildlife Consumption. Based on positive feedback, WAR decided to publish this story in order to personalize the suffering many animals end ure and to encourage a larger national and international audience to take part in wildlife protection.

Gab is the ambassador of the SOS Programme – Educating on wildlife consumption that have been conducting by WAR and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training since 2011 in approximately 300 secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City. In the academic year 2015-2016, the SOS Programme includes four different components including (1) SOS Traveling Exhibition, (2) Visiting Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station, (3) Integrating wildlife protection into ten lession of official curriculum of Biology Subject Grade 7, and (4) Integrating wildlife protection into extracurriculum activities.

This story book of 40 pages sized 18X18cm is created by Ms. Huyen Do Thi Thanh – WAR’s Wildlife Education Manager and is illustrated by nearly 40 artistic paintings of the famous artist Mr. Dao Van Hoang who is devoting for wildlife and nature painting in Vietnam. The book is now widely distributed to secondary school students in the SOS Programme in Ho Chi Minh City.

The material helps teachers to integrate wildlife protection content into lessons of Biology Subject grade 7.

This Vietnamese language material that has 100 pages, sided 20.5X29cm includes three chapters.  Chapter 1: Integration Fundamentals includes basic information on Vietnam’s wildlife, some positive teaching methodologies and the legal structure of integrating wildlife protection into Biology Subject Grade 7. Chapter 2: Integration objects, content and address includes detailed information on object, content and where to integrate wildlife protection content for each of ten lessons of Biology Subject Grade 7.  Chapter 3: Sample lessons is ten sample lessons of integration including: Animal World, Insect, Fish, Amphibians, Reptile, Bird, Bat, Carnivore, Rodent, Hoof, Primate, and endangered animals.  Each sample lesson was designed based on a standard lesson plan that included lesson objectives, preparation, and teaching and learning activities.  Each sample lesson also includes general information of the animal group for teachers to refer to.  The material also includes an evaluation form for the teacher to take important notes on the integration programme.

A set of teaching aid tool for integrating wildlife protection into Biology Subject grade 7 was also developed along this material.

The material is developed under the framework of the SOS programme that aims to educate secondary school students on wildlife consumption. This material is an initiative of WAR in cooperation with HCMC Department of Education and Training and HCMC Forest Protection Department.
